Liberty herself makes the appeal in this 1918 color lithograph, and the title puts the request in her voice: billions of dollars are needed, and needed now. The poster belongs to the wartime campaign to sell Liberty Bonds, the government loans that helped finance the United States' effort in World War I after its entry in 1917. Casting the Statue of Liberty as the speaker tied a familiar national symbol to the duty of buying bonds. Z.P. Nikolaki's design shows how much the war effort depended on ordinary citizens lending money, not just on soldiers.
