The Garde theater stood on State Street, across from the New London public library, and this 1931 ink drawing records it as a movie house in a Connecticut port city where the cinema had become a regular part of downtown life. The sheet belongs to the Library of Congress's architectural and engineering collection, where drawings like this document a building's plans and elevations for construction, alteration or record. Its subjects are listed among the city's motion picture theaters of the 1930s, a reminder that many downtown houses of the period were designed as much to draw passersby as to seat audiences. The Garde later became a performing arts center, so the drawing preserves how its street front was conceived before that change.
