The chaos on the floor of the New York Gold Exchange on September 24, 1869, known as Black Friday, is the subject of this wood engraving. Speculators Jay Gould and James Fisk had tried to corner the gold market, driving the price up sharply before it collapsed when the federal government sold gold to break the squeeze. Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper ran the scene on October 9, 1869, and its crowded, shouting brokers show how quickly fortunes were made and lost that day.
