Two faces of one building are shown here, the south-east and north-west fronts, each drawn flat and straight on as an architect would set them out. An elevation leaves out perspective and shadow so that the true height, width, and spacing of windows, doors, and ornament can be measured directly, which made drawings like this working tools for builders and city officials reviewing plans. The record does not identify the building, but theater drawings of this kind were common during periods of active urban construction. Look closely at the proportions and decorative detail, which often reveal how the architect meant the public entrance to read.
