A small cigarette card that pairs a pitcher with his trainer, the caption lists the player as "Lyons, L.F.," but the subject is Jim Devlin, who was banned from the National League in 1877 after a game-fixing scandal involving the Louisville club. Devlin's career never recovered from that suspension, though he continued to play in lesser leagues and was still pitching in the 1880s when this card was made. The trainer, William H. Taylor, appears beside him, a reminder that professional clubs of the period employed men to look after players' conditioning. Gross & Co. issued the set in cigarette packs, and cards like this one, with their stiff, posed group portraits, were a common way fans of the era collected images of ballplayers.
