The only identifying words on this glass negative are a surname, Johnston, and the borough of Brooklyn, and the Library of Congress notes that even these come from unverified Bain News Service data. The George Grantham Bain Collection consists mainly of news pictures taken in New York and elsewhere in the first two decades of the twentieth century, when Bain's agency sold prints to newspapers and magazines. Brooklyn had been part of New York City since consolidation in 1898, and its streets, waterfront and neighborhoods were busy subjects for photographers of that era. Because the record gives no date or event, the picture is best read as a sample of everyday city life in that period.
