The only identifying detail here is the name "Miller" attached to Brooklyn, and the Bain News Service's own title is unverified, so the subject may be a person, a business, or a street. The picture is a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of work made by a New York news photography service that supplied pictures to newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century. Glass plates were the standard medium for press and commercial photographers until roughly the 1920s, when film largely replaced them. Brooklyn was then a fast-growing city of neighborhoods, workplaces, and street life, which makes the collection a useful window onto the borough.
