The building in this view is Kismet Temple, a Brooklyn meeting hall of the Shriners, the fraternal order whose local chapters took their names from Arabic and Persian words. Its name, which means fate or destiny, reflects the order's fondness for Near Eastern imagery in its ritual and architecture. The National Photo Company, which sent photographers across American cities in the early 1920s, made the negative, and the date of about 1923 is inferred from other negatives in the same group. The glass plate shows streaks and blemishes from the gradual breakdown of its original coating, which is worth keeping in mind when judging fine detail in the image.
