Titled simply "XRayphoto," this picture belongs to the history of the radiograph, an image formed when X-rays pass through an object and expose photographic film. Wilhelm Röntgen identified X-rays in late 1895, and within months physicians and physicists were using them to view bones and embedded objects without surgery. The board files it under inventions and science because it marks the point where photography became a way of seeing inside solid matter. Dense material such as bone blocks more of the rays and shows up pale on the film, while softer tissue lets them through and appears dark.
