Sturmbataillon Schmidt takes its name from a German stormtroop battalion, a title that marks it apart from the many wartime views of trenches and artillery on this board. Stormtroop tactics took shape in 1917 and 1918, when German commanders trained small, heavily armed teams to infiltrate enemy lines instead of advancing in dense waves. By 1919 the fighting had ended, and the German army was being cut back under the Treaty of Versailles, so a photograph from that year shows a force in transition.
