Eleanor Roosevelt shakes hands with Lyndon B. Johnson in this United Press International wire photo from October 1960, taken during the fall campaign, when Johnson was the Democratic vice presidential nominee. The two had a wary history: Roosevelt had criticized aspects of Johnson's Senate record on civil rights, and she had first backed Adlai Stevenson for the presidential nomination. Her willingness to appear with him reflected the party's effort to bring together its liberal and Southern wings behind John F. Kennedy's ticket.
