Here the Continental soldiers are shown marching in winter, with musicians among them, a scene that the record ties to the years 1770 to 1780. The print is a chromolithograph, a color printing process widely used in the 1870s to make inexpensive images, and its 1875 copyright places it near the centennial of the Revolution, when American printmakers often returned to the war for subjects. Because Library staff devised the title, the picture itself is the best guide to its theme. Images like this helped shape how later Americans imagined the army of the Revolution: worn, cold, and still marching on.
