Here the subject is Paul Revere himself, shown in a photographic reproduction of a mural by Robert Reid in the Massachusetts State House in Boston. The scene draws on the night of April 18, 1775, when Revere rode out to warn colonial militia that British troops were marching toward Lexington and Concord, a journey later fixed in the public mind by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 1861 poem. The mural belongs to the State House's early twentieth-century decoration, when patriotic murals were installed to celebrate Massachusetts's role in the Revolution. Photographs like this one carried such paintings beyond the building, making them a useful record of how the legend was shown to the public.
