Titled "Leviathan," this glass negative most likely shows the ocean liner that carried that name, though the Bain News Service title is unverified and the record gives no date. The ship began as the German liner *Vaterland*, built for Hamburg America Line, and was seized by the United States after it entered the war in 1917. Renamed *Leviathan*, it became one of the largest ships in the American fleet and carried thousands of troops to France in 1918. Bain's photographers covered New York waterfront and shipping news, so the picture likely records the vessel in or around the port.
