Rather than showing the building's exterior, this view is made from it, so the subject is the city as seen from the Woolworth Building's upper floors. Cass Gilbert designed the tower, which opened in 1913 at Broadway and Park Place in lower Manhattan and held the title of world's tallest building until the Chrysler Building surpassed it in 1930. The glass negative came from the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers. The title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact vantage point and date remain uncertain.
