A classroom full of students and their teacher in Washington, D.C., this cyanotype is one of a series from Frances Benjamin Johnston's work in the city's public schools around 1899. The card that came with it is labeled "Geogr." and "Schools," which suggests a geography lesson, and the album page it came from is marked "3rd Division." The cyanotype process, which yields the distinctive blue-and-white tones, was inexpensive and reliable, so it was often used for documentary records like this one. Looking closely, you can see how the schoolroom was arranged for group instruction at the end of the nineteenth century.
