Harvard's first and second teams line up against each other in this late-September 1912 scrimmage, preserved on a glass negative from the Bain News Service. Early-season practice drew close attention from the press, and under coach Percy Haughton the Crimson were one of the era's most prominent football programs. George Grantham Bain's agency sold news photographs to newspapers across the country, so images like this one reached readers far from the Cambridge practice fields. The date and title come from the agency's own notes, which have not been independently verified, so specifics of the play itself remain uncertain.
