Harvard's first and second teams facing off in a practice scrimmage offers a glimpse of how college football teams prepared, with the second string standing in for upcoming opponents. The picture belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs from the Bain News Service, which supplied pictures to New York newspapers and magazines in the early 1900s. Glass negatives like this one were the standard for press photographers of the period, but the date of the scrimmage is not recorded, so the title is unverified.
