The Wentworth in New Castle, New Hampshire, stands out for its setting on a small island at the mouth of the Piscataqua River, where the town sits at the edge of Portsmouth Harbor. The Hotel Wentworth grew out of the summer hospitality trade that followed the seaside resort boom of the late 1800s, when visitors came by steamer and rail to escape inland heat. Its wooden hotel and dining rooms drew guests who wanted both a sea view and a comfortable bed. Looking at the building, note the long verandas and the simple clapboard lines typical of the period's grand shore hotels.
