A pie eating contest at a 4-H Club fair in Cimarron, Kansas, is the scene in this August 1939 picture, preserved on a nitrate negative. 4-H was a youth program built around farm and home skills, and fairs gave members a chance to show their work and compete in events that were as much social as serious. The image comes from the Farm Security Administration's documentary project on rural America during the Depression, which recorded small-town life alongside hardship. Transferred through the Office of War Information in 1944, the negative is nitrate film, a material far more fragile than later safety stock.
