The vantage point is what sets this print apart: it was drawn from the tower of St. Patrick's Church, the Irish parish established in New Orleans in the 1830s, giving a high, sweeping view over the city's rooftops. Published in New York in 1852 by Smith Brothers & Co., the color lithograph was drawn by J.W. Hill and Smith and printed by B.F. Smith, Jr. Views like this were popular in the mid-19th century, when lithography let publishers sell detailed city scenes to people who would never visit. Because New Orleans was then one of the country's busiest ports, such images also recorded a city defined by river trade and rapid growth.
