The only identifying detail on record is the name "M. Sylva," which the Bain News Service apparently noted on the negative or its caption card. The record flags that title as unverified, so the subject's identity and the occasion remain uncertain. George Grantham Bain founded the service in New York around 1899, and it supplied photographs of people and news events to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Its glass negatives, usually five by seven inches or smaller, were captioned quickly and not always checked, so the name is best read as a lead rather than a confirmed identification.
