Cassatt's title places this scene under a horse chestnut tree, and the French inscription on the sheet, which describes a woman and child at play, echoes that outdoor setting. Cassatt, an American who worked for most of her career in France, turned to color printmaking in the 1890s, combining drypoint and aquatint to build soft tones across several plates. The technique suited her tender, intimate studies of mothers and children, which became central to her later work. The Library of Congress included this print in its *American Treasures* exhibition in 2001 and 2002.
