For the freedom and civilization of the world" is the Italian title printed on this 1917 color lithograph by Marcello Dudovich, a Trieste-born artist who became one of Italy's best-known poster designers. Italy had entered the First World War in 1915 and relied on public war loans and appeals like this one to finance the effort. This copy was printed by A. Hoen & Co. of Baltimore and lists the U.S. Department of Labor as sponsor, which suggests it was reproduced for Italian-speaking audiences in America after the United States entered the war in April 1917.
