Two girls in winter coats and a dog stand in deep snow, a detail that lifts this card above the usual holiday scene of a lone figure or a fireplace. Christmas postcards like this one became popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when color printing grew cheaper and families mailed greetings to relatives across long distances. Cards of children playing outdoors in snow were especially common, since they paired the season's cheer with an image of winter fun that many readers knew firsthand. Look closely at the dog and the girls' poses, which show how illustrators of the era used playful gesture to suggest warmth and affection.
