Taken in March 1922, this glass negative shows motor boats of a coastal patrol, a kind of small, fast craft that was becoming more common as the Coast Guard expanded its work along American shores. The year fell early in Prohibition, when federal patrols tried to intercept liquor smuggling by sea, so the boats reflect a period of new enforcement demands. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., commercial studio, made the image, and its title comes from data written on the negative sleeve, since the caption was scratched off the glass. Faint streaks and blemishes from the aging of the original coating are visible.
