St. Michael's Redoubt, shown here as a wood engraving, stands on the shore of Norton Sound in western Alaska, where Russian traders built a fort in the 1830s. The print follows a drawing by H.W. Elliott and appeared in a London book from 1898 titled *The Yukon Territory*. By the late 1890s, St. Michael had become a busy transfer point for goods heading up the Yukon River toward the gold fields, and the post's role in that trade is what gives the scene its significance. Some details of the original caption are unverified, so the book itself is the best place to confirm the specifics.
