Few cathedrals in France rise as high as the one at Amiens, and this 1926 etching makes its great Gothic mass the whole subject. It is number 8 in a series of French churches, and this impression is an artist's proof, signed and dated on the plate and again in pencil, a mark that the printmaker kept for trial impressions before an edition was pulled. Made a few years after the First World War, when fighting had swept through the Somme region, the sheet also reflects the wider interest of American artists in medieval French architecture during the 1920s. The Library of Congress received it as a gift.
