The subject is John Stevens's experimental railway at Hoboken, New Jersey, where in 1825 Stevens, a lawyer and inventor, ran a steam-powered vehicle on a small circular track on his estate, one of the earliest attempts at steam locomotion in America. This halftone reproduces a painting by Thomas B. Craig, a later artist's reconstruction of that event rather than a contemporary view. Halftone was a printing process for reproducing images in books and periodicals, so this print is much later than the event it shows. The caption card gives no date for the print itself.
