This glass negative is catalogued under the name of Philip Snowden, the British Labour politician who served as Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1924 and again from 1929 to 1931. He was known for his precise grasp of public finance and his strict views on government spending. The George Grantham Bain Collection came from a commercial news photography agency that covered newsworthy visitors and events, especially in Washington and New York, so its negatives often record public figures passing through American cities. The name comes from the agency's original caption information, which has not been independently verified.
