Fuseli's painting of Lady Macbeth sleepwalking, from Act 5 of Shakespeare's play, is the subject of this mezzotint, which carries the line "One, two; why then 'tis time to do't." The image was painted by Henry Fuseli, the Swiss-born artist working in London, and engraved by John Raphael Smith, who published it there on January 6, 1784. Fuseli's Shakespeare subjects were popular with London audiences of the period, and this scene of the guilt-ridden queen rubbing at an imagined stain was among the most discussed. The print is lacking its bottom margin, where the title and publication details would appear.
