Few things show a town's ambitions like a working drawing for a new theater, and this ink-on-paper sheet records the Colonial at the corner of Hamilton and South Fifth streets in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Dated 1928, it belongs to the Architecture, Design and Engineering drawings at the Library of Congress and is catalogued under theaters and motion picture houses, a sign of how quickly movies had become central to local entertainment. The design came from Wilmer & Vincent, a Reading, Pennsylvania firm that designed many theaters across the state during the 1920s. Drawings like this one served as the blueprint for every beam and facade detail, so they reveal a great deal about how such buildings were planned.
