Here the focus is a draped and ornamented catafalque, the raised platform that held a coffin, set up in a public square with crowds gathered around it. Such structures appeared in cities along the route of Abraham Lincoln's funeral train in April and May 1865, as the assassinated president's body traveled from Washington to Springfield, Illinois. Communities draped their streets and monuments in black crepe, flags and evergreen, and the mourners who filed past show how deeply the nation grieved. Images like this one capture a rare moment when ordinary citizens gathered in the open to say farewell.
