Lincoln's visit to City Point, Virginia, in the spring of 1865 is the detail that sets this picture apart from the many other Lincoln portraits in the gallery. By then the Union supply base on the James River had become the nerve center of the campaign against Petersburg and Richmond, and Ulysses S. Grant had made it his headquarters. The president stayed there for several days in late March and early April, conferring with Grant and the army's commanders as the siege neared its end. The scene offers a rare look at the wartime commander in chief outside Washington, close to the front.
