Lincoln's visit to the Antietam battlefield in early October 1862 produced some of the most familiar images of his presidency, and this view records the group standing together with Allan Pinkerton, the Chicago detective who led Union intelligence work, and Maj. Gen. John A. McClernand. Alexander Gardner made the exposure on a glass plate using the wet collodion process, which required the plate to be coated, sensitized and exposed before it dried. Gardner was working for Mathew Brady's studio at the time, and his battlefield photographs from this trip were among the first to reach the public in quantity.
