The title pairs two roles, beggar and peddler, for a figure on Broadway, as the Bain News Service recorded it on the negative. That label is unverified, and the record gives no date. The agency worked in New York from about 1900 into the 1920s, and its glass negatives document city life as it unfolded. Hawkers and the poor were a familiar presence on Manhattan's crowded sidewalks in those years, so the picture offers a glimpse of street-level commerce and hardship.
