Calbraith Perry "Cal" Rodgers is the subject here, and the aviator's name marks this portrait as a record of one of the early pioneers of American flight. In late 1911 he set out to fly across the country, a trip that was less a single flight than a long series of hops, repairs, and crashes, all made in a fragile Wright biplane. The Bain News Service, a Manhattan-based wire photo agency, documented many aviators of that era for newspaper readers. The catalog record gives no date, and its title comes from the agency's own caption cards, so the identification rests on those notes. Rodgers died in a crash near Long Beach, California, in April 1912.
