The Whirlpool on the Niagara River sits a few miles downstream from the falls, where the river makes a sharp bend between steep gorge walls. This glass-plate negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which between about 1900 and 1906 sent photographers across the country and issued views of scenic sites for sale as postcards and prints. The Niagara gorge drew steady crowds during those years, and the whirlpool, where water swirls in a deep basin, was one of the most visited spots along the river. The view is a useful record of how the site looked before the tourist development that came later.
