Angels, bells and holly are the signature motifs of this Christmas greetings card, which places a winged figure above a cluster of bells wrapped in sprigs of holly. Postcards of this kind were widely mailed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when printing advances made cheap color lithography possible and sending a holiday card became a common way to reach family and friends far away. Such cards often used sentimental imagery like this to convey good wishes in a few words, and the bells usually signaled festive cheer while holly stood for endurance and good fortune.
