Holly sprigs and a cluster of children set this card apart from the many snow-covered village and robin scenes on the Christmas board. Postcards like this one were produced in large numbers from the late 1800s into the early 1900s, when mailing a card was a common way to send seasonal greetings across towns and countries. Printers often pictured children in winter scenes because they were thought to embody the innocence and cheer of the holiday. Look closely at the detailing of the holly leaves and berries, which shows how color lithography was used to make small cards feel warm and cheerful.
