A nativity scene printed alongside a greeting line makes this card a small piece of holiday sending from the early twentieth century, when postcards were the quickest way to wish friends and family well across town or across the country. Christmas cards of this kind typically combined a religious image, often the manger, the Holy Family, or the shepherds, with a short printed salutation, and they were frequently mailed in the weeks before the holiday. Their illustrations were usually produced by lithographic printing, which allowed bright colors to be reproduced in large runs at modest cost. Looking closely at the card's borders and lettering can reveal much about the fashions of its era.
