Captioned as Felia Weingartner, this glass negative carries a name that the Bain News Service recorded on its negative or caption card, though the Library of Congress notes that the identification is unverified. The Bain News Service, founded by George Grantham Bain in New York, produced a large body of news and portrait photographs in the early twentieth century, and many of its negatives were made on glass plates like this one. Because the record gives no date, the best way to read the image is as a product of that studio's working practice: quick, documentary portraiture of people in the public eye, with the caption often written by hand at the time of printing.
