This picture is titled with the name Nellie Sebree, though the Library of Congress notes that this title comes from unverified data written on the negative or its caption card, so the identity of the sitter is not confirmed. The image survives as a small glass negative, one of tens of thousands made by the Bain News Service, the New York photo agency founded by George Grantham Bain around 1899. Bain's company sold images of people, news events and everyday scenes to newspapers, so its negatives show how the press pictured the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, so the photograph is best understood within that broader Bain body of work.
