The caption names three men, Barbier, Dupont and A. Dubost, placed together at Versailles, but the record gives no dates or roles to confirm who they were or what brought them there. Versailles, the palace southwest of Paris, was the site of major diplomatic work in 1919, when the Treaty of Versailles was negotiated, so the location alone points to a period of intense official activity. The Bain News Service, which supplied news photographs to American newspapers from the early 1900s into the 1920s, often worked from hurried notes, so the names are worth checking against other sources before being relied on.
