Baseball Polka" is a sheet music cover, so the game appears here as a subject for parlor entertainment rather than as a scene on the field. Music publishers of the 1860s sold pieces to families who played the piano at home, and they often borrowed whatever sporting craze was popular to attract buyers. In 1867 baseball was still an amateur pastime, with clubs playing under loose local rules before the National Association of Base Ball Players and later professional leagues standardized the sport. The cover shows how quickly baseball had moved from city lots into everyday popular culture.
