The debris piled against the stone railroad bridge over the Conemaugh River marks the spot where wreckage from Johnstown gathered after the South Fork Dam failed on May 31, 1889. Wood engravings like this one carried news of the disaster to readers across the country, and this scene appeared in Harper's Weekly that year across two facing pages. The jam of houses, lumber and rail cars at the bridge trapped many people, and fire broke out in the wreckage that night, which made this spot one of the most dramatic in accounts of the flood.
