A military band from the 3rd New Hampshire Infantry is shown at Hilton Head, South Carolina, in a photograph the record dates to about February 28, 1862, though that date comes from an unverified caption card. Union forces had taken Hilton Head in November 1861 during the Port Royal expedition, and the island became a major staging base for Union operations along the South Atlantic coast. Regimental bands like this one provided music for drills, parades, and camp life, offering a glimpse of the routines that filled soldiers' time between campaigns. The caption card also lists Fort Pulaski, the Georgia fort that Union forces captured in April 1862, among the image's subjects.
