Its tagline, "A climax in gaiety," sets this lithograph apart as an advertisement for *Over the Fence*, a comedy by Owen Davis, who was in his mid-twenties when it appeared and later became one of the most prolific American playwrights, winning a Pulitzer Prize in 1923 for *Icebound*. Printed in Cincinnati in 1899 by the U.S. Printing Co., the poster reflects the late nineteenth-century trade in large, colorful theatrical lithographs that touring productions used to draw audiences. Its subject headings also point to the stereotyped portrayals of African American and Jewish characters common on stage at the time, as well as the chorus girls and sliding comedy that were part of the show's appeal.
