This view shows the St. Louis Courthouse, the Greek Revival building on the city's Broadway waterfront that served as the county seat for much of the nineteenth century. Its cast-iron dome, added during construction in the 1850s and 1860s, made it one of the most recognizable landmarks on the St. Louis skyline. Around 1903 it was still the center of the city's legal business, and it was also the courtroom where the Dred Scott case was argued in the 1840s and 1850s, a fact that gives the building a lasting place in American legal history.
