Stereo cards like this one let nineteenth-century viewers tour a city from their parlors, and this example shows the St. Louis Court House, the Greek Revival building on Broadway whose cast-iron dome rose over the old downtown near the Mississippi. The card was issued by Boehl & Koenig, a St. Louis studio, so it records a local landmark made for local and wider buyers. The courthouse also hosted the early trials in the Dred Scott freedom suit in the late 1840s, which gives the building significance beyond its architecture. The record dates the card only to the 1870s, so the exact year is uncertain.
